Disabling radiator
Hi all,
I haven't had much luck with completely disabling the radiators in my house by turning the knob (1-8) all the way off. For some reason, it's not guaranteed to not produce any heat, though maybe this is why there is no "0" indicator. The heaters apparently measure the outside temperature and use that to gauge how much heat to produce, but I'm fairly certain the knob controls the intensity, so I'd hope I can completely disable it.
My landlord told me that if I swivel the valve (probably not the correct term for it, sorry) by 90 degrees, then that will disable the radiator. In the first image, you'll see the valve on the right side is in the normal position. In the second image, I've rotated it 90 degrees. Obviously the radiator shouldn't be doing anything in the summer, but I cannot take any risks as it is located right next to my guitar. I'm hesitant to use this method until I've heard some confirmation from non-landlord-type people.

is the radiator hot to the touch in the middle of the summer.that is the vent your turning on the right .the boiler might be sensing outside air to run but not to produce for heat ...maybe hot domestic water?shutting the larger valve on the lower left shuts the steam feed into it...looking down on it go full CW to close full CCW to open.

yep that is a steam boiler..... as beethere said pictures will help.. ..can't read anymore..

Could have a tankless coil in it, or side arm heater. And the aquastat could be set too high.

maybe i'm wrong, but I see a hand valve on the left side of the radiator in pic 1.....

Still, the problem is why is the boiler making steam this time of year.

I think his post said it was not being used at this time..but wanted to be sure he could shut it down???..

Thanks for the replies.
To end the confusion: during the heating season, I turned the numbered knob on the bottom of the vent to try turning off the heat, which didn't work. So, my land-lord suggested turning the entire vent 90degrees (which is pictured in the 2nd image). Because it is summer, I have not yet tested this (and don't really want to because it seems risky).
My friend just pointed out the valve on the LEFT, the one that some of you pointed out, and told me to turn it fully CW to prevent any steam from getting in. So, that is what I've done and I trust him. Though of course, I won't know if it works or not until heating season.
I will try to find the boiler that you guys mentioned and take some pics, though I doubt I could tamper with it as I live in an apartment building.

The vent(device on the right) is adjustable to increase or decrease teh amount of heat you get from the rad. the valve on the right is to shut off the heat completely.
