Determining Tonage

What is the formula for determining what size AC unit is needed? I know that there are many different factors, however I am just looking for a high level rule of thumb calculation. The home is a raised ranch in NJ, approximately 1750 Sq FT

Thanks!

Dave

sq footage divided by 400 usually gets you close. In your case, you would probably need a 4 or 4.5 ton unit.

first, you must take into consideration the size of your furnace and ductwork, for every ton of refrigeration 400 CFM of air flow are needed, if the fan or the duct cant handle the CFM then you are going to have all sorts of problems with the new A/C, check the ductwork and furnace and dont go crazy over the top, bigger is not better, for a house like your I'd go with a 2.5 tons unit if the fan/duct allows for it.
