Dads Central Air In Fl Not Working

My dad has central air and in July the air started coming out warm. He had a tech come out and he said it was low on freon. He refilled it and it worked until now. The tech came back out last week(it stopped working again) and told my dad that the fan was not running in the unit outside although the motor was running. He also said the valves were bad. He did something and got it working again. Well, the fan stopped working again today and the ac is not working. He is having the tech come back out. This is a 23yo old Lennox unit. He is telling my dad that he is gogint o have to get a brand new system. Anyone have any advie on what questions my dad can ask or things he can check. I just want to make sure he is not getting scammed. He does not have a lot of $$$so I feel bad.........Thanks very much....

At 23 yrs old the valves are worn from use/age and where I am less than 5% of those units at that age are still running. Like a 23 yr old car engine the compressor will wear out or possibly seize up soon. Not worth spending a lot of repair $$ on. If you don't trust the tech call another company for a 2nd opinion for peace of mind.

Have your Dad get a couple more estimates from other contractors.
