Cover a condenser during snow?

Pardon the ignorance of this California boy but do I need to cover my condenser during winter snows? There are covers at home depot which I see many of my neighbors using and when I asked one about it he said it was to keep water out of it. I guess water getting into the condenser, freezing, and expanding might cause a problem but won't covering it cause condensation which could do the same thing?

Thanks.
