Cost for Duct replacement

New guy here. I am trying to save on some energy cost by improving the airflow from the furnace. The current design of the plenum has 12 ducts coming from the plenum out to the vents. I have had several heat and air companies out to give me quotes on a redesign of the plenum and running new duct work. The redesign will have 3 main ducts comming out of the plenum and then branches from the main duct to the vents. My quotes have ranged from $1000, $1500 to $1800. I am looking for opinions on the range of price. The 1800 dollar quote includes installing new ducts, some air balancers, new plenum, cleaning and servicing A/C and furnace. The $1000 and $1500 quote included a new plenum and new ducts. Not sure what to think about the large spread in quotes. Thanks

The wide range has something to do with what will be done.It also has something to do with the wide differances in the amount of labor needed to do the job.
You need to see if any of them performed a manual "D".
Any other way of quoting is pure guess work.

Thanks. I am learning as I go. I will ask if they used the manual D to calculate the correct design. I did not know to ask that and none of the contractors mentioned that they used it. Thanks

Cheap is never good and good is never cheap. I can tell you right now you'd be looking at well over 3 grand if I were to do it. Heck, I wouldn't even get out of bed to simply look at that job for $1800.00.

Ask about the insulation factor of the plenum and ducts. Down here it used to be R-6 but the new city ordinance is mandating r-8 as of next year. It's the thickness of the insulation on the duct itself. R-8 is thicker. Keeps cool air cool and warm air warm and keeps it all seperated properly.

Doc, you gotta remember it's still a pretty flat market in most places, And prices could be alot diff where OP lives.

Thanks for the input Doc. I'm not as concerned about the price as getting it done right. I just find it interesting that the range of cost is kind of extreme. I will look into what the city code is for the insulating factor and what the contractors are planning to use. I am still researching technicians to do the job

A 1000 bucks for 3 trunk lines and new supply lines? Doesn't sound like they will be too concerned about how it works after its in.
