Converting Heating System


Hello, We had a fire in our 2 story colonial a few years back and we needed to replace our heating and A/C system. The house is built on slab with access to the attic but not much space. The previous heating system ran the pipes in the concrete when needed to solve issues with door openings and such.The fire ruined these pipes so we decided to install a forced hot air system with the boiler in the mechanical room off the garage and a vertical air handler in a small room directly above. The distribution goes from the air handler into the attic where it splits into two supplies with two powered dampers to control air flow as needed. The hard duct travels the length of the house- about 45 feet and drops down to condition the space below whether on the first floor or second.

Sorry for the long explanation but I thought it would save time. Heres the deal. the system is horrible. There is not enough air flow, especially the farthest rooms from the unit ( of course it is the north side which is the coldest) and leaves many drafts and cold spots.

I am thinking of converting back to a hydronic system on the first floor as that is the worst of the two and leave the second as is and use the A coil for cooling which doesnt seem to be so bad. Your Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

was the system sized right and was it installed by certified company..1 st thing... and pics of system would help..ben sr

Hi, It was installed by a very reputable HVAC company. I can send a pic but it will be difficult as all you will see is insulated duct, the attic is not very user friendly.
In my opinion the runs are too long for the amount of air needed for the each space. The branch duct are either 7 or 8 inches of flex duct but in some cases to get to the first floor they have to go horizontal up to 5 ft from the take off then down 8 ft to the first floor and then possible 90 to the register.
They replaced all the original registers with a high output design which did help a little but still isnt great. If I liked it warm say 72 degrees during winter in CT it would have a hard time keeping up and the furnace would never shut off.

iam having a hard time picturing what you have ..but it sounds odd but again maybe it me....how about blower speed on the heating cycle to increase air flow....one thougth..ben sr
