A constant hummmm

I noticed the other day that our outside unit has a constant humming noise coming from it. I don't remember hearing it during the summer. We just turned on the heat last week. Any ideas? Would a visit from the local a/c man be in order? Thanks for any help!

Is it a heat pump or split system?

Sounds like the coil on the reversing valve, switch it back to cooling which should deenergize the coil to see if the humming stops and having your system serviced is a good idea.
