Compressor won't start, but it cranks

Is it the capacitor?

Condenser box fan runs, freon is good pressure.

Compressor sounds like it wants to start- I hear intermittent zapping/cranking noise.

The diagnostic guy tried a booster kit, but if i remember correctly, he ran it without the capacitor in place (he laid it on the ground. Don't know if that matters), and the compressor would not start.

He seemed inexperienced or shady. He suggested that I replace the whole box unit outside and coils for $3000 after talking with his boss.

I don't want to spend that kind of money.

The compressor and capacitor were replaced by the same company 6 years ago. I hardly ever use the a/c.

the pressure needs to equalize during trying to get it to run either from pushing the contactor in or thru the stat call.all a hard start kit does is boost the CAP on start and forces the compressor to start against unequalized sides of the machine..with the windings taking a hit from the amp draw on starting.so has it been super hot out there with the condenser directly in the Cali sun?what is the Freon history system is tight not a seasonly Freon top off ..reason being oil droplets leak also and if you have had numeriuos charging calls the oil might be low to a point the compressor is slightly dry and hard staring.hard start kits are the suicide road to a new compressor and new freon nightmare.either a stat time delay built in or inline out on the condenser gives the system to equalize for a call for cooling.

No, the box is in the shade all day. Air temp is 92F.

My gut tells me that since the compressor is trying to start, the compressor is probably still OK, especially being just 6 years old.

I looked at the components.

The Fan and compressor are both connected to the same capacitor. There's another flask shaped capacitor with nothing connected to it.

The fan runs fine, but the compressor does not run. Can it still be a bad capacitor?
I did not observe if the tech tested the capacitor, but I'm assuming he did as standard procedure.

This is the part-

This is an equivalent, but much cheaper part??

Saw one here that a couple of wacks with a hammer might help a long idled compressor to start. Your call. Other than a bad thermal klixon.
