Question

compressor wont kick back in

I am having a problem with a friend of mine's A/C unit. It has a 17degree temp split but the compressor drops out now & then & wont come back on for a long time. My gauges show that the pressures are not equalizing after it kicks out, to allow the pressure switch to let the compressor restart. There is an expansion valve on the system. She tells me that the entire system was just replaced about 2yrs. ago. Any suggestions??? Its hot here in Houston & she is an elderly woman.

Are you a tech?

All units have an expansion valves so what are you getting at?

If the pressures don't equalize and you are sure it is cycling on the press switch it may be restricted or very low on gas.

We need more info to be sure

Sounds to me like you are dealing with a recip compressor not a scroll. With a recip compressor on a expansion vale you need a hard start kit installed. This compressor will not start until the pressures are almost equal with out a hard start kit.
