Compressor fan not spinning; erratic behavior

Good morning-

Discovered yesterday the compressor fan was not spinning but the compressor was working fine. Unfortunately by the time I figured that out the lines were quite hot.

The motor spins free and ohms out OK.
The starter cap (3/35) reads 2.73/??? (Beyond meter to read).
The contacor engages and ohms correctly.

When I reassembled the unit the fan started up fine, but 20 minutes later shut off, leaving the compressor running.

Suggestions where to go from here?
Motor is Emerson k55hxhdd 8562
Cap is hq1086679AX

Thanks. I'll have to wait a day to get it into the lab.
reassembled the unit fired right up. This time I stood next to it and waited. Eventually the fan slowed and the braked to a stop. Fan was somewhat stiff to turn compared to earlier. Measured case temp of fan with non contact ir thermometer and got 202f. Pulled the disconnect instead of testing for voltage on fan. Relay was still engaged.

Probably weak electrical insulation in motor.

In other words, replace motor :-)

Matches frame, amps, size, shaft. Needs a psc 5uf cap.

Since my current system uses a dual motor run cap (35/3/440), can I substitute this (35/5/440)

For the current one

Ya, 35/5/440 will work fine.

Replaced fan and cap. Old fan, once off, showed a couple of rough spots when turned and wouldn't spin freely. Note to self- buy a clamp meter.

New fan and cap running now, seems OK.

Is there a special term for a reduction sleeve I can slip over the new cap to fit the old hole size?

Thanks all. Only an hour to install and about 200 mosquito bites.

I just use plumbers strap when the old clamp is bigger then the new cap needs.
