Compressor bad on 9 year old Carrier??

My AC was not cooling the house and periodically making a squealing sound. I have been told my compressor is bad on my 9 yr. old carrier AC unit. Got a quote to replace the compressor and a quote to replace the unit. There's only a few hundred dollars difference between the two. Does this sound correct? Is it possible to replace the compressor on my own? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

only if you have a recovery machine, recovery tank, vacume pump. micron gage, scale, freon, torch kit, and your EPA certification. why the price is close is the labor to replace a compressor is longer than replaceing the outdoor unit. if you replace the compressor, remember the fan motor, controls are nine yrs old too.

Thanks, I was leaning towards replacing the entire unit as you suggested.

it should be way less for compressor change only..... not a smart idea on a 9 year old unit in my opinion............

might be the case in the great white north but nation wide in the US the diff between a cmp and condenser change out IS so close that a new unit is more feasible,

if it is a mechanical failure it is an easy change out and should be cheaper then a new condenser change out.if it is a burn out (which yours isn't)thats closer to a change out dryers, clean up of system new freon.what freon is the exsisting system...might have to go with a R-410A update then there in on the air handler changing stuff.staying with the original freon and just a compressor change should be considered.
