Cold Air Return

I have a 21 3/4 x 26 3/4 x 12 in (grill size) cold air return on my main floor. Unfortunately, it protrudes into an area that I want to build into a mudroom. I have a finished basement with two cold air returns to the same system. I was wondering if it is possible to resize/move/ or remove this as it is a hindrance to my building a bench, cubbies, and lockers. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks and let me know if more information is needed!
