I am currently finishing my basement. I currently heating vents extended from the main ducts to different places on the ceiling in my basement, along with a cold air return which is not currently extended but is open right off the main cold air return duct on the ceiling.
I am going to extend the heating down to floor level by extending through framed walls. I am wondering two things. For the cold air return:
1. what do I need to use(materials to extend the cold air return to floor level from the duct overhead. Is it pretty much the same as the heating? How do I do this if it's different?
2. How many cold air returns do I need. There is currently 5 heating vents extended off the main duct in the unfinished basement. I will be creating 4 different rooms when everything is finished. Do I need to add cold air returns or is what the builder put in (1 cold air return for entire basement) enough?
1 for the entire basement is all you need. where I am we don't extend the heat down to the floor in basement rooms and it gets very cold where I am and works just fine with ceiling vents. waste of time and materials IMO. cut 1" off the bottom of the doors to let some air draw out of the rooms when the doors are closed is all you need.
"Cut it twice and it is still too short".
