cold air return

on my cold air return duct, just before it heads thru the filter and into the furnace are two grilles. When the HVAC technicians installed the new ac, they said i should keep the grills open. Why? Is that only during the summer and not during the winter? The air is blowing out of the grills. is that normal?

The a/c needs more return air than you have ducted so they added the grilles in an effort to get more air back to the drive for cooling season, the last thing you want in heating mode is to pull air from around the furnace, that could cause combustion problems. The real solution is to add more returns to the system.

no the air is blowing out those grills not in.

Then it can't be on the return. You may feel air movement, try and cover them with a piece of paper and see if they blow or pull.

u are correct.. it was pulling the air in. So i should keep those vents open in the summer and closed in the winter?
