Closing Vents to unused rooms

Is it beneficial to close vents in unused rooms? My air handler is old and it takes a while to cool the rooms being used. Since I do not want to run the AC a lot due to inefficiency of the air handler, is it wise to raise the temp on the thermostat during the day and lower it during the evening a degree or two at a time I live in south Texas.
