check valve question

Im a forced air guy and moms house has a Taco check valve getting stuck on baseboard heat. I have done the quick smack it loose fix but want to repair it properly. Do you guys recommend changing the original flow check or should i just cut in a compression type flow check into the copper piping? My second prob. is i only have a shutoff on the return side of the zone. is shutting that and the fill, and dropping the pressure enough for me not to make a mess or cause more probs. for myself???

If it stuck once then it will stick again/ or partially hang up so it sounds like it should be removed and replaced properly rather than adding another one? There is a lot of expansion/contraction with hot water heating so a valve should be threaded or soldered in rather than compression fittings which may come loose/leak. I used to do lots of boilers but got away from them for awhile now. Sounds like you need to isolate the system properly and safely. If you get a bunch of air in while working on it then it will get airlocked unless you bleed it properly. Do you have any buddies in the biz who can help you with it? Everything looks easy until you get right into it and find out it isn't so. There is a plumbing forum at the top of this page also.

you can try an flush it too-- open the flo check (knob on top) make sure the pressure is proper (10-15 psi hot) and run that zone fow awhile. make sure to close the flo check after. lotsa times that will flush out any sediment that gets under the seat in the flo-check- if that doesn't work I would replace it not add another one-

thanks i figured adding another is a little hack. there isnt any antifreeze in the system so the worst that can happen is that i will have to purge for a while might as well change it. thanks again
