Step 1. Determine if the system is actually low on charge by taking sub cooling and super heat readings.
Step 2. look for leak.
Step 3. Repair leak.
Step 4. Change liquid line filter drier, and vacuuming system.
Step 5. Add proper refrigerant until sub cooling and super heat are at there proper readings.

1. Verify if there is a leak(superheat and subcool) Verifying its not a restriction, dirty coil, air flow issue with duct work.. return ect.. can go on and on (low sub cool and high superheat-leak)
2. Once verified, find leak.. replace or repair .. pull vacumm
3.Determine metering Device and freon type
4.Charge using superheat or subcool(depends on metering device)
5. Some newer Condensors have tags stating what the require depending on outside temperatures
Good Luck.. but school does help before getting on your own!
