Central heating system with no spot for filter?
In my first pic above, could I just take a reciprocating saw and cut a filter slot where the return duct comes into the furnace? I was actually working in a basement somewhere yesterday where it looked like somebody did it to their furnace to make a slot for their air filter. Have you seen this done before?

you have to install two U channels top and bottom for the filter to slide into
check online for description and installation instructions i have never done one |

Yeah it seems simple enough. I'll Google around a little more to see what I can find.
