Central heating help please!!!

I was wondering if anyone could help me, i purchased my first house not long ago and found it to be very cold at times, to correct this I went round the house and opened all the valves on the radiators thinking that was how you control the heat. As a result my central heating bangs loudly constantly whenever the heating is on. I have since figured out that there is a dial on my combi boiler to control the heat however I now have a really annoying banging issue. I have bled the system but to no joy, i have been reading in places something about balancing the radiators using the valves that I stupidly opened. Does anyone know what I need to do to get rid of the banging without getting a plumber in and without buying any specialist tools?

Thanks in advance.

Check for loose piping, due to when they expand, you hear banging. They make brackets that isolate the pipes to keep from hearing the banging. Matter of fact on ATOH (Ask This Old House) this past weekend, it showed the same situation, and how to fix it.

If they did not bang before and alls you did was open up the values, why not try cosing them all just a little till it stops banging. Find where it makes the most noise and start there. If it makes more noise between two rooms or values, play with those.

Im sure someone here will be able to explain the exact reason why they are banging, too much presser, not enough (which might be the case if you opened them all, now there is no restriction) and weather to open or close at point of sound.

it sounds like you have a steam boiler. But with out more info it's hard to say. If is is a steam boiler you will have a sight glass on the front of it. Check to make sure the glass is half full. Your system might be overfilled and water is making it into the mains. Also closing off all your valves is not alway a good this with steam. The boiler is sized for the house so if you close off to many rads. then the boiler will make steam to fast.
These are just some thoughts for if you have a steam boiler.

If it is hot water system you could have some pipes banging where they go through the joists. It could also be a cir. pump making the noise.
