Central A/C turns off every night at midnight?

Hi,
My central A/C has a problem where every night around midnight it seems to turn off and not respond to the thermostats call to turn on. I end up waking up every night around 12:30 very hot, walk to the thermostat (which is set to 73 deg. and AUTO), see that it is calling for cooling but that nothing is happening. I move the switch from AUTO to FAN and I start to get some air blowing into the room which is enough to help with the temperature and I fall back asleep.
Any idea what is going on? I've checked the programming of the thermostat and it seems fine. The A/C system works perfectly over the course of the day. I only have this one issue every single night around midnight.

Is the A/C on your power company's shutoff program?

Good question Jerryh3 - I just moved into this home. How would I find that out? Would a power company's shutoff program only affect the condenser and not the blower?

Look between your breaker panel and the outside condenser. There would be a box that the power wire runs into and out of.

ok, I'll look for that tonight when I get home jerryh3. If it is indeed there how do I prevent my A/C from turning off in the middle of the night?

If you find out you are not tied to the electric company take the thermostat off programming and just run the unit on manual a day or two at your desired temperature and see what happens.

How old is the thermostat?
Far stretch....but
I know there were Y2k problems with some - & they failed at midnight
There are also all sorts of "trip dates" (failure) since Y2K
But I couldn't find one for 2008, for 2009 next one is 09/09/09

Investigation is still in process. I did set the thermostat to "manual" last night at a constant temperature. That succeeded in keeping the room cool. Next step is to figure out why it doesn't function properly in "Auto" mode. May just be a defective thermostat that needs to be replaced.

So far so good keep it on for another day or two and go from there.

If it works then may be a new stat is in order.
