Central A/C and Heat stopped working, but fan still blows

About a week ago, our AC stopped blowing cold air on the hottest day ever recorded in L.A. It's a central unit. The weird thing is that it no longer blows hot air from the heater either. The blower/fan still works, but just no hot or cold air. I don't know anything about AC/Heat systems, and before I hire someone to come in to my home, I would like to know a little more about what this could possibly be..maybe even something very simple. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be causing this problem? Any advice would be very appreciated!!

Thanks!

If it's a heat pump, loss of refrigerant will cause loss of both functions.

Have you checked the circuit breakers?

Yes I did check the circuit breaker. I even shut it on and off hoping that would somehow help.

Does it use gas for fuel for heat at all?
Does the outside machine normally run when you're using heat?

I believe it uses gas for heat. And I'm not sure what you mean by the second question, but the central air unit is inside the house. I'm sorry, I just really don't know anything about this stuff.

I feel its beyond your hands. I don't have much else to suggest, other than call for service.
