Central Air unit not working, fan not spinning and unit is smoking

Our central air went out on Saturday while we were not home. We returned home to the house being 80. My husband checked the unit and it was really really hot. He turned the unit off for about a half and hour. Then when he turned it back on and went to look at the unit again, it was smoking and the fan blade was not spinning.

Any advice?

First shut off the breaker, then call a service man.

I hope the first thing he did was turn the power off and call someone to come fix it. Smoke coming from anything electrical is never ever a good thing. It indicates that some thing or things got hot enough to burn off some form of insulating material (usually) that is rated NOT to burn or smoke at a very high temperature.

The potential for multiple things having been damaged by the situation more than likely means that knowledge and experience of exactly how everything works in the unit is going to be needed to quickly and safely fix what is wrong.

Probably time for a new fan motor and capacitor.
