Central air stopped cooling overnight. Can it be temporary?

Main hig voltage wires into unit connect at contactor. Two wires, two poles. Across both should be 240.

I swapped out the capacitor and the comp still didn't kick on. The capacitor buzzes about every minute like it's trying to do something. The orange wire that seamed dead before is energized when it buzzes. Should I let it keep running and eventually it will kick on? Do I need one of those caps that helps hard starts? If the system was low and had a low pressure switch would that wire even try to power up?

Correction, when I touch the fan and the herm connectors together they do give me 240. The C to herm does nothing unless it's buzzing. Ideas?

Now I swapped the capacitor over to my other unit and it works.

What are the other likely causes? All refrigerant leaked out over night and the low pressure switch won't let it turn on? Bad compressor?

If the contactor is pulled in then it's not a pressure switch. The buzz is the compressor trying to start and it's locked up. You can try a 5-2-1 hard start but it might or might not work. Worth a try at least. If that doesn't do it then it's new compressor time.

Yes contactor is in when the system wants to run. I was just looking at hard start kits. Do I need to find one that works with my system or they're pretty much universal?

This is an American Standard unit, anyone think I could get this covered under warranty if it is the comp? It was installed less than 4 years ago. I emailed them, so hopefully they get back to me soon.

The compressor is probably covered but the labor and materials are not.

Be prepared for a big bill for the labor and material.

Most people think when they have a 5 or 10 year compressor warranty it won't cost anything.

Yea, $2000 popped into my head when I woke up to warm air that morning. Care to take a stab at what it should cost? Sucks in a house that was built 3 and a half years ago.
