Central Air return duct location

I am in the process of planning to remodel our single family home. We are planning to move the central air unit out of the house into the grarage.

In the new plan I hope to place the input to the return air duct some where in the center of the house. Should the duct draw air from floor lever or from near he cieling level.

I have been asking around and am getting confliction answers

There's always talk that a cieling return may upset a heat pump systems head pressure and/or heating will be affected by drawing the warm air from the cieling. I have found these problems minimal and no cause for concern.
Filters stay cleaner longer in the cieling as they don't pick up the smaller dust particles and hair as they do near the floor.

Central Air Return Duct Location

My heater is a higher efficiency (90%) natural gas unit purchased about seven year ago. My concern is that pulling warm air for the top of living space would be less efficient that pulling cool air from the floor level.

Thanks.

I would bet you would not notice any difference, but if dropping the return to the floor is easily done with little expense, it also wouldn't hurt.
