Central air burning smell intermittent

I have a 7 year old Lennox heating a/c unit which last night had a burning smell showed up only in the basement (where it sits) while it was cooling the house (very muggy and hot here in the Northeast), the smell I could not distinguish between burning rubber or possibly electrical motor burn. I immediately shut down the system, today I wanted to try to get a better understanding of what was making the smell so turned only the fan on but no burning smell. I then tried the A/C and again no burning smell? I tried each for a good half hour but the system worked as it should, cooling the house and pushing air. The heating system was cleaned and serviced last year but not the A/C, new filter about 2 months ago and no changes to the system have occurred.

Now the only available time for a tech to come out is not for two days, so my main question is would you run the system at all as long as there was no smell? Or would you leave it off till the tech services it? I'd like to get the humidity out of the house.

Usually if a motor goes kaput then it spreads the smell thru the house and you don't just smell it in the basement. Had a service call where the guys washing machine motor overheated and smelled and he thought it was the furnace. Any other appliances down there that can be overheating?

Just the water heater and the furnace, and doing the smell test determined it had to be the furnace. That and the basement was finished a couple months ago - researching sheetrock dust in the furnace is scaring the crap out of me.. tech doesn't come till friday

Go ahead and run it. No repairing that motor or control board so use it till it dies. Hopefully it will last untill Friday.

I wonder if the ventor fan got energized. They can stink real bad when seized up. Had one get backfilled with water from an improperly drained AC where it common joined to the furnace drain. The coil being higher will backfeed water if the drain hose gets plugged. Burns out the ventor when it is full of water.

Carefully watch for ice buildup on the big line. If so then shut it down ASAP as it is freezing up from a slow fan.
