Carrier Weathermaster 9200 flame roll-out switch problem

Help...
My 11 year old Carrier is having a couple of problems. It seems that several times per day the flame roll-out switch kicks. I reset it and the furnace fires up ok...but then kicks again. I am thinking of replacing the switch - logical, right? However, the top of the unit (above the combustion chamber) gets very hot - too hot to keep you hand on it for more than a second or two - it is also giving off an ozone-type odor, (possibly the vent sealant cooking). The service guy said that your heat exchanger may be bad/clogged - and you might as well replace the whole furnace given its age.

Two questions - 1)is it time to replace the furnace (is 11 yrs too long for this unit to be in service),
and, 2)a new roll-out switch may fix my problem - but what about the heat exchanger...is there a way to service this?

thanks

Carrier Weathermaster 9200 flame roll-out switch problem

The roll out switch is not the main problem. the roll out switch pops when excess heat is where it should NOT be. Replacing the roll out switch most likly will waist time and money. This should be handled by a pro. heat exchanger if failed might be under warranty and can be replaced

Carrier Weathermaster 9200 flame roll-out switch problem

thanks for the reply...that is where I was going. As for the service man who said it was an "old" unit...is that accurate? - should I only expect 11 years service? Should I replace the heat exchanger or the whole thing?

Lots of questions,
thanks
