Carrier WeatherMaker 8000 runs for a short while, then stops, and repeats.

It's 16 years old. We live in lower mainland BC (Vancouver area).

Apparently this started happening last fall:

The furnace sometimes makes some noise (which I thought was normal - nothing strange) and will run for a short while, stop, and run again.

My dad called someone from Pro Ace Heating to come in who said the furnace motor and flame sensor would need to be replaced.

Total cost after tax: ~$4270

I'm no expert, that seems excessively high. I did a search on a company and they have a pretty poor rating - even a news article about their practice.

So what do you think about the cost?
Would this be something that can be done ourselves (let me know if you need more information)?
If you know a reliable company in lower-mainland BC, feel free to suggest it as well.

Edit: ~$4270 to replace the furnace. ~$1000 to replace the motor + sensor, but just a rough estimate from a quick look.

$4270 are they Cheech and Chong Htg and doin BC Bud?

Call another company. Probably needs a new flame sensor for around $200 or less BUT the heat exchanger should be checked by a experienced Carrier tech as they crack on the dimples near the limit control. At that age the circuit board develops intermittent problems too.

How likely is it that the motor AND sensor need replacing? I would get another opinion and you said their track record is bad anyway.

Cleaning the sensor did the trick! Apparently it was already clean, but my dad had a day off and said he'll take a look and try cleaning it himself. Works now. Thanks!

all pricing for repairs / replacement strongly parallels warranty offered be it manufacturers and/or company's.

But yes, sounds a bit too high especially if only furnace...

Many companies SHOULD let the customer know that a simple part could be replaced (or if not cleaned such as is this case that your dad did) but they should let you know why they do not recommend settling at just that.

Plain and simple, age. Your dad could have very easily cleaned the flame sensor and thus heating now works, but what's the point if you wake up dead due to a cracked heat exchanger no on knew about?
