Carrier Troubles - Fails to ignite- sometimes

The problem started out as once a week, and now its most of the time. The Hot Surface Igniter was replaced even though it looked good. Gas to the HSI seems to be weak, and when it does ignite, that burner is the last to start. Wondering is the gas pressure is to low to the house. Could it be a flaky pressure switch?

Gas meter and or regulator to the house could be failing. Get your utility co to check that first. After that your furnace gas valve is probably failing and you need a experienced tech to check that with a manometer and volt meter etc.

The gas meter and line was put in last summer. And, I replaced the gas value. I will have the gas company come and check the pressure to the house. ANy other ideas?

Carefully remove the burners. Carefully clean the slots with a wire brush and blow them out with compressed air. Then wash them/rinse them out with hot water in a sink. Dry them and re-install.

The burners were cleaned twice. And, they look almost new. This furnance was install last summer, but it was used. It worked fine for 2 months until the temp dropped below zero. With the temp back in the 40s, I might try and see if it works better.

What is the model #. Is it a mid efficiency or high efficiency unit with plastic vent pipes?

If the red gasket at the base of the igniter is missing/damaged/cracked and leaking air in then it won't light properly. Check for an intake screen where the intake pipe attaches to the burner box. May have debris inside.

Very good answer to the problem. The Red gasket was not installed correctly. Had a wrinkle in it. This made a big difference. The furnance will start up now, but still has a problem. Only 2 of the 3 burners work. The one with the HSI does NOT. I'm thinking it is still leaking air in that section through the HSI. I think the red gasket should go down along the HSI and through the metal holder. The hole on the metal bracket which the HSI goes through its not sealed with the gasket. Any thoughts???

Why would anyone have a used furnace installed? Craziness.

The gasket is not that tight around the HSI and does not need to be. I have heard that spiders lay eggs in the burner orifices of some units. Poke them thru with a wire or remove and inspect them.

Yuri,

Thanks so much!

You hit the problem right on the nose! The red gasket is now air tight and the problem is gone and the furnance works beautiful.

And, why would anyone install a used furnance. I'm handy and unemployed. And, I got a great deal on the furnance.

And, I plan to build a house with materials that others can not use at full value. Most everything will be 50 cents on the dollar. A project I've always wanted to do.

And, I love to fix things.

This is a great site, hope to help others.

Terry
