Carrier Furnace won't automatically start

I have a 40 year old Carrier furnace. We recently installed an outside oiltank to replace the underground tank. (just in case this is pertinent.)

It did not kick on automatically last night and I went down and hot the reset button. Started right up. And has had to be started manually all day.

When it shuts down, it shakes a lot, blowing some smoke from the exhaust area(The valve on the exhaust pipe.) which ends up in the house area.

It is scheduled to be replaced but not til spring!

Any thought are appreciated!

Nozzle going out.
Probably has a lot of carbon build up on the end cone also.

Vermontservant,
I agree on the probable dirty/ worn nozzle. How is the light-off after you reset the flame safety control? How does the burner sound during a run cycle? Is there by chance a solenoid valve on the nozzle supply line between the oilrack and pump. Pump pressure, oil quality/ volume could be a factor. The 'eye' and 'oilrack assy.' are probably also dirty.

There is a good chance a nozzle and good cleaning will get you through to the 'changeout'. Best of luck--
