Carrier Cobra circa 1996 w/ electronic ignition

Hi All,

We had heat (alot of heat!) up until mid afternoon yesterday and blower works without heat today. We have power to the unit, we have gas to the unit (at least gas fireplace and stove work), tried recyling the unit at the circuit breaker and it appeared to be attepting to light without success. Have never worked with furnace or gas before and am not really excited about starting. Really want to confirm my suspicions that the electronic igniter is the likely culprit (and a typical retail cost for fixing it) before i bring someone out to look at it. I am new to my neighborhood (Norfolk Va) and do not have established ties with any service company and am more afraid of shylocks than cold .

thanx in advance

ChuckT

Carrier Cobra circa 1996 w/ electronic ignition

Hi ChuckT

The first question that we will need an answer too, when you say the furnace tries to light do you see an orange glow? Second question, does the blower run continuously when the thermostat is calling for heat. If the answer to the first question is yes, then the ignitor is fine. If the answer to the second question is yes, you could have an open limit. If you could be a bit more detailed about the series of events starting from turning the thermostat to heat, I bet you I can nail it.

Good luck
Rusty

1996 Cobra furnace. Unit works sometimes. Tried 3 new thermostats. New board, new ignitor. Unit will work after a reset then won't recycle later. Keeps trying to light then code 14. Normally occurs in early morning hours. I've had service tech's out 8 times (refuse to come any more, said all is well). Please help

Kajun,
Start your own post. It gets too confusing following two different people's posts.
