Carrier/Bryant/Payne 3 wire gas pilot assy 1991 furnace

Over the last 5 yrs. I have had my 3 wire gas pilot assy replaced 4 times. I went 14yrs on 1. what can be causing the replacments to go bad so soon. Is there a fix.

What were the symptoms. They should last 10 or more years. There are cheap after market ones and then there is the OEM Carrier one. I would use the Carrier one.

the furnace exhaust fan starts, after awhile pilot comes on but wont fire main burn and that is it .

That is a real pain in the arze unit to service but I will try help. The pilot flame heats a warp switch which expands and closes a set of contacts. If the pilot flame is too small or the orifice gets dirty it won't generate enough heat. The gas valve pilot regulator may need adjusting or it is failing. Have not seen one in yrs so the other guys can correct me if I am wrong. Post the complete model # and I can probably dig up a service manual for it online.

Is it a high efficiency furnace?

We do get a furnace and a/c PM every yr by a good local company with no problems ever found and it did work about 2 weeks ago

In side it says Carrier but out side it says Payne plus 90

No online service manual. That furnace had serious problems with heat exchanger failures. Your experienced Carrier dealer should know all about it. May be part of the problem.

My experience is that the collector box fails/corrodes the metal away and leaks and overall they are difficult and time consuming/expensive to service. Newer units have diagnostic features and this one is quite complex/tricky unless you grew up with it as a tech and know its problems. I would buy a new one or it may become a money $$ repair pit.

A more experienced tech may know it better but can be hard to find.

When the hvac guy came in the first time he took the unit all apart inspected the a/c coil and exchanger that was about 2006 and they do about 1 to 1 1/2 hr of work each time they do the pm's. intake, exhaust, main gas even return air checks

I have worked on quite a few of them in my 32 yrs and they are difficult to troubleshoot. Have no diagnostic features. If you can find a tech with over 20 yrs experience and on Carriers you may get better results. Reread my post above yours. In my climate we cannot tolerate unreliable furnaces and spending 4 hours and repeat callbacks does not cut it. At 20 yrs old my clients will replace it.

Yes on the replacing but money is not avalable at this time. I know we need to replace this unit. I was hoping there was a known fix out here seeing it is so old. I'm told the life span on this unit is 17yr. Thanks Yuri

Does your gas supplier/utility co. have a 5 yr financing plan? Mine does and only charges 6% interest. Better than sinking $$ into this unit. The newer Carriers are quite good.

I dont know about my gas company but I do know there is a goverment rebate of 30% up to $1500 here in the US. I will check out supplier funding Thanks for the info and help. GBG
