Question

Carrier 58GSC Furnace won't start

I admit I am a novice. I've read through a few posts but I need some initial troubleshooting help to get my furnace working. The thermostat makes its familiar click once I turn the stat to HEAT, but no joy when silence follows. A/C works fine-- blower etc so I may be mistaken in assuming my thermostat is working properly with the heat function. Guessing Carrier unit is vintage 1989-91 ish. Stat is about 10 years old.
Checked the breakers. Gas is turned on. Made sure the temp was set higher than ambient. All the easy stuff Carrier puts on its website before it tells you to call a technician...
I am in the military and was stationed overseas so my house was rented the last 5 years and the tenants were poor at replacing the filters. None mentioned the furnace had issues so I assume it is Murphy's law now that I am back in the house. Not sure if dirt is the culprit or bad electronics. I'm knee deep in home repairs and I have limited time at the moment to peruse all the posts so I need help from the experts out there. Thanks much!

Can you see a blinking led diagnostic light through a furnace door viewing port?
If so, record the blinking sequence and check it against the fault legend inside the furnace.

It's probably too old for that so we need you to turn off the furnace power for a couple of minutes and then turn the power back on with the stat calling for heat. Watch the igniter at the pilot assy to see if that click sound is a visable spark at the igniter?
Describe what you see.
Do you have an electrical meter?

Thanks, How. No LED. I think Earth shoes were still in vogue when this was built. Killed the breaker for two minutes. Turned the heat on and watched the igniter. No clicking. No action. No nothing. Dead in the water. Houston sent a nice schematic which is almost identical to the one pasted on my unit. I will have to digest this and see how the picture matches up to the physical components.

Thanks, How. If it's a gap issue, wouldn't I hear something as with starting a gas grill? The only click I hear is at the stat after I switch it to HEAT.

If you have an igniter, you will have a wire connecting to it in the pilot assembly. If you have a standing pilot system, you will have instructions inside the furnace on how to relight the pilot.
Which do you have?

Gents,

In reviewing the above provided schematic with my own, I believe I have a Spark Electrode which does not show on the above schematic. It also has a 5 min lockout circuit. What do you recommend I try next? Thanks.

Thanks, Houston. No the first one was more similar. I have a picture, but I can't seem to upload it. I tried to find the fuses. Are they coil spring type behind a clear plastic cover?

HVACTECH,
Thanks for joining in. Yes! The wires are as you describe them. What do you suggest?

The first thing I would confirm is that the thermostat circuit is really OK.
Remove the stat wire in the furnace connected to "R". Put a jumper between R & W. What happens?

Does your system have a vent damper? If so, this would have to open and be confirmed before the pilot would light.

Is there a blown fuse on your board?

Ba da Bing! Good one, How! :>D The electronic igniter sparked and the gas lit which takes those components out of the equation. Do I need a new thermostat?
How long will it take for the burners to light? The pilot stays lit, but the burners did not light. I had the pilot on for about 30-45 seconds and none of the burners lit.
