I removed an old gas space heater in my finished attic. I plan sealing up the wall and abandoning the old flue. Can I keep the flue in place and seal the top on the roof (to be moisture/waterproof)? Or do I need to remove the flue completely and seal the resulting hole in the roof? What would be the best way to do this?
You can leave it.. If it has a cap .. you shouldn't have any moisture problems.. You may cause problems trying to remove & seal hole in roof.. Seal it where it connected to heater or it will remove heat/ cool from that area of the home...
When it rains heavily the bottom wall plate looks a bit wet, as a few rain drops have gotten through. Perhaps the issue is more specific to the current state of the cap on top, I'll get on the roof and take a picture of it
Make sure you seal all access to the attic knee wall area though.
And, if the chimney vent is above your roof line. make sure that it won't draw in hot air from ridge vents, instead of cooler air from sofit vents.
