Can I replace a sealed gas fireplace with a gas fireplace with bi-fold doors

We bought a home with a sealed glass fireplace which vents to the outside wall. We have been told that these types of fireplaces are really efficient, but we don't need it for the heat - mainly ambiance. We don't like the sealed look - it just looks fake. We were told we could not replace the doors because of the draw. Can we simply replace the entire insert so we can have a more realistic looking fireplace?

Hi and welcom Mekerr, to the best dary DIY'r site on the web.

That would depend on the type of chimney liner you have, which by guessing would be B-vent, and if it is, I would see a problem with what you are thinking.

Other than the opening would now be able to create a draft allowing inside air out, and outside air in = cold drafts.

If the fireplace vents outside it is called a direct vent which exhausts AND draws combustion air through the termination. It is designed to have be only sealedcombustion. Your glass should have a gasket on it. If you remove the sealed glass it would now vent into the home because your pressure zone changed (it is easier to vent through the front than follow the chimney out). Try to find a make and model most fireplaces offer different "front" options and many have bi-fold options (strictly cosmetic not for use).
