Can i force my heat pump to run only in backup mode?

Hey guys,

Weíre adding a generator via a manual transfer switch to our house. Iím no HVAC expert so I may be omitting helpful details which may help.

We have a split heat pump with an outside condenser unit which the heat pump uses. The problem is I donít know if the generator will be able to handle the entire load, according to my current cost energy meter its about 5kw with few lights on and the heat on. Not sure what the surge is but its getting close to our max capacity (5.5kw w/ 8k surge)

The heat pump does have a gas backup, which I assume would require a great deal less electricity.

Is there any way to have the furnace run only the backup?

Our house was built this June so the equipment should be newer but Iíll try and find model numbers tonight when I get home.

Thanks,
Bryan

A few things to consider: the electrical signal from a generator may not be as clean as a furnace control board needs so it might not run at all. There are electrical signal cleaning devices that you can purchase for this reason.

Your thermostat should have an emergency heat option on it to simply run emergency heat. You can always disconnect w1 from the thermostat as heat pump is first stage heat and w2 would be secondary, emergency.

Thanks for the reply!

I think the thermostat will run. With sandy we had a small 2000 watt generator that we 'plugged' into the furnace which powered the thermostat.

Now with the bigger generator i will try before the final install.

I'll take a look at the thermostat and see if i can get it to run only the gas backup.

Thanks!
