Can a compressor be patched?

I replaced a fan motor and the rod was too long and sat atop the compessor which grindedand made a pin sized whole. Fixed the length on the rod to the fan motor but now have a hole in the compressor! Question is, can the hole possibly be patched like with jbwelding or similar? I know it may sound janky but im just trying to find an alternative to spending big $$$ that dont have. Thanks for any advise.

You may be able to find a competent welder to do it,however you will lose your UL listing

I stand corrected,I though you were talking about an Air compressor.
A/C comp= No Fix

Afraid that compressor is done for. The welded seams of refrigeration compressors, are lap seams. It prevents splatter from getting into the compressor. Welding a hole would leave splatter. Using a cover plate would prevent splatter. Of course, you would need a certified pressure vessel welder to do it, and they usually aren't cheap.

Then after all that expense, you would still need the system vacuumed, and recharged. Since r22 isn't cheap anymore, this could be a few hundred bucks more.

And after all that, you have to cross your fingers the compressor last more then a month or 2.

Beenthere couldn't be more correct, you will go through all the trials and tribulations to get it welded and vacuumed and recharged and all the while you will be crossing your fingers.

Chaulk it up to an expensive lesson, see if your Home owners insurance can cover it somehow, not likely but it might be worth a shot.

Not to mention the oil inside that compressor might not take kindly to sparks

Keep your eyes and ears open, you may come across a good used one. God know's how many good one's I've just scrapped out. Heck, I left a brand new compressor, the coil was stolen from the brand new condenser, in the back yard of the home.

Just know the tonnage you need and the make of the compressor for piping reasons. Like for like is the best way.

If you were in my area I'd have no problem hooking you up with one.

Everybody screws up once in a while. Lessons learned are usually worth their cost.
