A/C won't turn off
Last Sunday we had a windstorm here in central Ohio, with winds as high as 75-mph (remnants of Hurricane Ike.) Hundreds of thousands lost power. When our power went off, we had our air conditioning on. When the power came back on on Wednesday, our air conditioning came back on as well. As it was now cool, I turned it off at the thermostat. The A/C unit outside (a Trane) kept going. I noticed, however, that there was no air coming through the vents. I went outside and saw that the line from the unit into the house was all iced up. This was actually several hours after the power came back on. The only way I could get the A/C to shut off was to pull out a fuse that was in a metal box next to the A/C unit.
So, I'm wondering first why no air was coming in the vents. Could there be a problem with the blower in my furnace? It's a Lenox Pulse furnace, about 25 years old. I am also wondering why the A/C unit won't turn off? Thanks in advance for any assistance. |

A/C won't turn off
Good news , bad news.
The repair may be covered by your HO insurance ( less deductible) Bad news: check to be sure hurricane deductibles are not being applied. sounds like surge (on /off) may have fried something. Look for reset buttons and anything else you are comfortable checking. |

A/C won't turn off
Because the Air Handler was not running, and the Coil did not know if the house was at temp yet because the Air Handler stopped working. With the unit being 25 years old, time to replace with a more up to date & Energy Efficient unit.

If blower motor is off, unit will ice up due to lack of airflow. Condenser (outside unit) contactor probably welded its contacts which is why it won't stop. Let unit thaw, then turn on blower fan only, to check motor. If O.K. check contactor outside. Leave fuse out so there's no power. Contactor should be free. You should be able to push contacts in and have them open when you remove your finger. If they don't push in, they are welded & contactor needs replacing.
