A/C won't turn on

Hello All,

New to the site and looking for some info before I drop some big dollars.

We have a heat pump and just recently the A/C quit working. When the A/C is turned on it tries to start (you can see the lights dimming with the electric load) but will not turn on. The outside fan is not turning on. The fan works when set to heat, so i assume that the fan motor is just fine. I wonder if it is low on freon. Mabye a leak or something.

I am an HVAC newbie. Just know what I have read on the internet.

Thanks for all replies.

Eric

Heat does not turn on either now. The outside fan is not starting up but with a little prod starts spinning nicely. Maybe it is as bad fan motor or capacitor?

Any thoughts?

Sounds exactly like a bad capacitor at your outdoor unit. Disconnect power to the unit and remove the cover to the electrical compartment. A capacitor is a little round or oval shaped, silver colored component with wires coming off of 2 or 3 terminal on the top.

Yours probably has three terminals. Write down EXACTLY where each wire goes. The terminals are probably labeled HERM C FAN. If your fan starts when you spin it, but your compressor doesn't start at all you have a bad dual capacitor.
