a/c return size

Two questions. I live in FL and my a/c return was located near the floor. Due to a renovation the drywall where the return was has been removed. Would it be better for the return to be closer to the ceiling (since I'm in an a/c dominated climate)?

For a 1600 sq ft home what is the smallest main return vent I could use? The workers already disposed of the old grill and I'm not sure what size to get to replace it. I think the old one was 20 X 16 but I'm not sure.

a/c return size

If some could post the size of their unit and the size of the return, that would be helpful.

a/c return size

Return grill sizing I go by to be safe it 1sq/ft per ton of cooling. or 144 sq. inches. example 2 ton would be a 12x24
Hope this helps.
