a/c question

Hi,

I know this make sound like a dumb question but where can you find the tonage amount of the condensing unit? Is it in right on the label?

model number, usually. in multiples of 12 or half of twelve. examples would be a 2 ton system would have a 24 in the model number, a three ton would have a 36, a 3.5 ton (three and a half ton) would have a 42, the 36 plus half of 12 so 36 and 6 equaling 42.

Can you tell me what the purpose of a draft hood is?

if you're talking about a natural draft hood on a furnace it's pretty much so you don't die by way of carbon monoxide poisoning. heat rises, so naturally any exhaust fumes are going to want to lift out the vent, naturally.

How does it prevent that?

it pulls in additional air into the flue to keep an upward flow of flue gasses to they dont come out into your home and living space

TRIVIA

And in a worst case scenario you can get the model # off the top of the compressor. Ie: AH2800675. the 28 means 28,000 BTUs. In our industry the compressors are actually rated in horsepower HP as well just like air compressors and other engines. The 28 compressor may be used in a 2 ton AC/24,000. Don't ask me why but they don't only/always build compressors with exact 24 capacity. Copeland, Tecumseh etc decided this a LONG time ago, we just buy what's available.

A draft hood technically the name is draft diverter diverts air into the front of it as the heat going up thru the furnace/heat exchanger creates a draft. this draft creates a venturi effect which sucks in air which is needed to allow draft up the chimney to remove all the fumes.

If you want a REALLY good book on gas burners etc buy this one from Chapters or wherever. It is the book they teach the gas course with here. Fundamentals of gas utilization. Take the ISBN # to the bookstore.
