Question

A/C not working - thermostat problem?

Hello,

I currently live in a condo unit. I have no clue what the technical HVAC system is, but I'll describe it briefly:

You got your thermostat (digital, non-programmable). Directly next to the thermostat is the air intake (and filter), along with the removable panel to service some parts. The air (either warm or cold) is then vented out of 2 vents (1 vent in each room).

Here's the problem: the A/C hasn't been working. The thermostat reads a temperature of 80F, even though I've tried setting the temperature to everything from 70-76F (and even lower). There is even an A/C symbol displaying on the thermostat panel, which I assume means it thinks it's cooling. Could this mean the A/C unit itself is broken, or is it just the thermostat that needs replacing?

Note that I want to avoid anyone entering the condo unit if possible (maintenance person, etc.), as I have anxiety problems. I'm a DIYer by nature, so if it's a basic fix, I'm more than capable. I just need help in identifying the problem to begin with.

Please help.

Refrigerant? That sounds like it's part of the A/C unit, right?

There isn't even any air coming out of the vents. It's not that the air isn't cold. There's literally no air being pushed through (the fans don't even turn on).

The fans DO work though. I can turn them on manually (just without any cold air being produced).

Is the outside condenser turning on when on call for cool or not? If when turning the system into cooling mode does the inside fan come on and blow air or not?

And I'm taking it this is a furr down unit, in the ceiling?

you need a technician to check your unit. This problem is not DYI stuff.

Not sure what kind of unit this is. I'm not well-versed in HVAC stuff.

JJBoy may be right but we can try.

Where is the outside condensing unit? Where is the inside blower, in the ceiling?

Step by step tell us what it's doing when on call for cool. What's it doing while on call for fan only? What's it doing when on call for heating?

Without these questions answered we'll have a hard time helping. What I'm trying to do is figure out if it's electrical or not and where.

if the outside condenser is running and the suppy vent is blowing not cold air you need someone to check the refrigerant pressure.

Give me a bit, I'll post something soon if I can. Maybe even with pics.

I don't think he meant only us but strangers in general and I'm the same way. I don't like strangers in my place either, I'm all suspicious.

This is where Canada has us beat. They literally still sleep with their doors unlocked. Can't do that here in the US, we got extra dead bolts and burglar bars, security monitoring systems, dogs and guns and that's still not enough.
