A/C In Garage

Hello all,

It's very likely that you will think I'm crazy, but I want to ask this question anyway...

I'm looking at renting a house that's got a one-car garage. I'd like to use that space for an audio mixing studio, but this being Texas, air conditioning is an issue.

An idea I had is sort of cribbed from books I've read on soundproofing, which is to build a room within a room. Maybe create a 10x7 space within the garage that would be easier to air condition.

My question is, what wall materials would I use for such an enterprise? Gypsum seems to be cheapest, but not terribly well insulated. I've heard insulation board mentioned, but I haven't found a great deal of information on it online.

The idea is that once the room is built, I can put a portable A/C unit in there, say 8,000 BTUs, thus keeping the equipment at a reasonable temperature.

I'm curious to hear opinions on this (probably insane) project. Thanks!

Look for acoustic tiles. They're a little pricey, but if you move you can take them with you. I think Musicians Friend carries them.

If you build a room within your garage, will you still be able to exhaust the AC unit to the outside?

Turns out we found a 3-bedroom within our price range, so I won't have to do the crazy garage thing. Whew...

Thanks for your input, I'll definitely keep it in mind for future crazy schemes.
