A/C fan issues or thermostat or worse?

Hi All,

I'm having trouble trying to understand the following issue with our a/c:

We finally turned on our cooling this afternoon. The a/c starts up fine and does a good job cooling the house. I've had the a/c run for about 15-20 minutes this afternoon with no problems. When the room temperature reaches the temperature we've set on the thermostat, I hear a click and a "cooling" icon on the thermostat goes away. All good so far! The fan continues to run for a short while after the cooling has stopped, however, about 15-20 seconds before switching off, the whole system switches off and then back on. The fan runs for 15-20 seconds before finally switching off. Is this indicative of a problem?

Thanks much,

Chet

Something is not right. And its not good for a compressor to have to restart 15 seconds later.

A/C fan issues or thermostat or worse?

Thanks. I went out this morning to check what was happening.

The system beings to cool and the compressor kicks on. When the temperature set is reached, the compressor switches off, but the blower (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term - I mean the equipment inside the house) is still on. When the blower switches on and off, the compressor does not come on - so I guess its just the blower that causing problems. I read elsewhere that perhaps the blower relay might be to blame?

Thanks all,

Chet

Could be blower relay, thermostat or a short in a wire.

A/C fan issues or thermostat or worse?

Hi,

Turn off the furnace switch and go to thermostat. Take the thermostat off and put a jumper between y and r. Then turn switch to furnace on. After running for ten minutes take off the wire at the r terminal where thermostat wiring is. See what happens then. This will give an idea if it is a thermostat issue. If still does it go to the board and take offf wiring and jump the same way. If still happens then it could be the relay as previously stated or just something that happens on that particular unit.

Hope this helps
