A/C comes on by itself

I have Tempstar 10 AC unit and a separate electric heater controlled by a common thermostat. The thermostat is set on heat (it is 65 degrees inside). Yesterday the AC unit came on by itself. Wife turned thermostat to off - no effect. Flipped breaker in house and fan stopped but compressor outside continued to run. Flipped breaker outside by the unit which stopped the AC. When I got home from work I flipped the breaker outside back on and the AC immediately started again. Replaced the thermostat but I still have the same problem. What are the next things to check?

Thanks for any suggestions.

A/C comes on by itself

Wow. An hour drive to the parts store in Houston, $13.53 for the part, including tax, and I am back in business. Now I am trying to convince my wife I saved enough by fixing it myself to buy a wide screen LCD TV before the Super Bowl. She's not believing a word I say.
