buy a used a/c unit?

i'm thinking about buying a 1.5yr. old ComfortMaker Split System A/C unit that is the same size as my existing unit (20yrs old), which takes R22. i already have a new A-Coil. Anything i should be looking for? Any recommendations or thoughts?

buy a used a/c unit?

It's not unheard of. I placed a 1993 12 seer 3 ton condensing unit on our 1750 sq ft house built in fall of 1996. I did buy a brand new A-coil. The condensing unit came from a 16x84 trailer that had less than 1 year use on it. Just make sure that NO contaminates are allowed to get inside. Are the ports taped up real good? I would ask for at least a 6 month guarantee. While you at it go ahead and install a new contactor. They cost less that $25 and should last for 6 years.
My old unit still functions as new. I'm in the market for a whole new system,,,I think (?).

Don't even waste your breath asking for a warranty on a used unit. What you should think about is why such a new system is being sold. Have you seen the unit run?
Do you even know if it starts up?

The other thing is the coil you have...what ton is ti ratted at.
Will they even work right with one another.

You need to know what SEER rating your A coil is and what SEER rating your condenser is. Also if the new A coil is a piston type metering device. Then you need to match the piston rated for the condenser for proper refrigerant flow.

Than your furnace has to be air condition ready.

Once you get all that done than you have to find a guy to install .

A normal job would be $600 plus the cost of filter drier, braze rod, welding gases, and copper fitting,,,oh,,,,and the cost of Freon to charge it up.

Hope this helps.

"let the buyer beware".

You have to get the model and serial number from each unit and call the distributor or the factory.

My suggestion would be why buy somebody else's head ache. You are going to spend over $1000 to get this thing working..assuming it runs at all.

That's more than half the cost of a new unit.

Yea unless I was getting the unit for real cheap, like 200 I would be careful with buying a used unit. Get a new contactor, clean the condenser coil and good luck.
