Bryant A/C 5 yrs old

Hello. I am hoping someone can help me. We have a Bryant a/c unit that is 5 yrs old. Yesterday it stopped working. We went outside to look at the pump and the compressor was frozen along with the hoses. After it defrosted we tried it again only to have it freeze again. The fan on the unit outside runs, but there is no A/C in the house. We had a repair guy come today and said the problem is that we need a new Variable Speed Fan Motor for our air handler, which is in our attic. Our home is a two story and approx. 2400 sq ft. The quote for just this part is anywhere between $700-$800. My question is this...could it possibly be anything other than the fan motor that is the problem? I was really hoping that it would be something that we could fix ourselves.
Thank you for any advice you can give us.

If the motor is not working, you won't feel any air coming from the supplies register......Also you can go to attic and check if the motor is running

**Always kill the power ** Hot air rises, but heat will always move from higher to lower temperatures. ** Real man shoot in manual. ** If it ain't grounded, it ain't dead.

Good chance that motor is still under warranty. Also, many times techs condemn he motor, when its just the module, which is much cheaper.

As been there said, its usually the module. It is basically a capacitor bank that is bolted to the motor, and is a seperate piece. The other componet in this group is the controller. There is a tester for this setup, and you can call the service company and request that a tech with the tester come out and tell you the exact part that is not working
