Blower Motor Whining

Blower Whining –

I recently had a Rheem modulating furnace installed and two-zone heating/cooling. They also installed a 10 inch bypass damper for a 3.5 ton air conditioner.

I had a problem with my blower motor whining which was caused by too much backpressure in my duct work. The contractor is talking about two solutions.
  • 1. Increase my bypass damper to 12 inches.
  • 2. Reduce my blower speed.
Is one option preferred or does it not matter?

Thanks,
Jerry

Maybe he just needs to properly adjust the bypass damper. The bypass isn't just for a/c, it's there to regulate the amount of air going into the ducts when your only using one of the two zones.

Mike -

Thanks for your return. Adjustment has been tried. As I understand it, a 10" bypass is used for a 3 ton AC, and a 12" bypass is used for a 4 ton AC.

I fall between the two.

How long is the bypass ducting in total? Was it done in flex or hard pipe?

It was done in hard pipe. It measures about 60 inches along the centerline of the pipe.
