Blower Motor quit, changed wiring now working?

Hi everyone hope your day is going well!

My blower motor stopped a few days ago. The hvac guy came out and said that I have an old Trane unti with a 2 speed motor. He un did it form the high speed and hooked it to the low speed, fired it up and everything is working fine.

He told me to leave the fan button on "ON" versus "AUTO" and I should get longer life out of it.

Questions -
  • Am I ok now?
  • Do I need to have a new motor put in?
Thanks

I have a hunch if you turn the fan to auto the blower will not start properly again. If you have a problem with the motor replace it. Why chance it failing when you really need it?

IF I lived in Virginia, and with the crazy cold weather fronts that have been moving down south bringing abnormal cold temps, and I had just had this happen to me, with the blower fan problem, I would be looking into getting this blower fan unit replaced ASAP. I would not want to wake up at 3 or 4 in the early A.M. to find that my unit was not working at all. I can open windows in the summer time to help cool off, but I just cannot find a way to heat the house when it's cold and my heat source has gone on the blink. Good Luck, David

What's to say at the lower fan speeds that the HX doesn't overheat and then cracks.... sound like a guaranteed replacement for your service guy.
I would replace and wire up for the proper speed.

So...
  • Cut the breaker off
  • Move heat to off, and blower on auto
  • Pull fuse block @ air handler out
  • Take cover off
  • Remove four or so bolts holding motor in
  • Pay attention to wiring and undo

What about current held in the capaciter? My understanding this is a 2 speed Trane unit Frame size 39, 1/4hp. 1986/7.

Thanks everyone for the advice ... In this economy it is alway snice to try and save a dollar or two when I can. He wanted $200 Labor after the initial diag and trip charge of 65...

Diagnostics, motor, cap.

$485.00, on a regular daytime service call.

Amazing how much prices change by location. The shop I work for is about half that and customers complain how expensive we are.

A. Perceived value.
B. How cranky is the wife.
C. Presentation of the repair.

Determines how much complaining is done about the price.

Usualy the low price around here is the guy that thinks everything over cost of parts and labor is profit. Most do not understand the true cost of overhead. A lot are one man bands living hand to mouth also. Find a phone book 5 years old or older and see who listed back then is still around today. The ones that are left know the cost of operation the others did not. OK I will stop the rant now.
