should i pump it back in and how much ?

Typically, they operate hot water heating systems at about 12 psi. If you go much lower than that you run the risk of having cavitation occur in your circulating pump. You need some pressure to prevent vapour bubbles from forming on the circ pump impeller.

So, use an air pump to pump your expansion tank up to 12 psi and you should be OK.

Are you sure he has a bladder tank.
