Bird in the heat duct

My mom had a bird in her house, trapped in a heat duct a few days ago. It was going back and forth between a heat vent in the kitchen to a vent about 30' away in the family room. She heard scratching and thumping and didn't know what it was, but then she saw its claws and beak sticking up through the vent.

When she was sure it was over near the kitchen vent, she pulled up the vent in the family room and covered it with a laundry basket turned upside-down so the bird could come out but not fly around in the house.

She's not positive, but she thinks it came in through either the exhaust pipe or the fresh air intake for the furnace. They found a dead bird in the furnace last year.

Is there something she can do to prevent the birds from getting in through those pipes? That is, if it is how they're getting in. We thought about covering the openings outside with wire mesh or chicken wire, but we live in Michigan and we're afraid ice would build up on the wire in the winter and block the openings.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Barb

Check your terminations at the chimney, fresh air and combustion air - there should be some sort of grill or mesh to prevent this from happening. If not, visit your local sheet metal house and get a proper fitting that will stop birds but not allow ice to build up. If she found the bird in the blower section, then it pretty much had to come from the fresh air intake; if it was in the burner section, then check your chimney. Hope this helps.

Thanks Statman. She doesn't have a chimney, there are two white (pvc?) pipes that come out of the side of the house. Do they make something for those?

It didn't come in through the PVC pipes for combustion air and flue exhaust. They go to the burner box, and the inducer. There would be no way to get to the air ducts from there.

You may have a fresh air duct for the house.

If so, a screen can be put on it..

Thanks beenthere. I'll have my mom ask the guy who installed the furnace about it. He would probably be the one who installed the fresh air duct.
